The First Question: Why are we doing on Cantonese opera?

by Li Tao

Originating in southern China's Cantonese culture, one of the branches of traditional Chinese opera, Cantonese opera is popular in Guangdong, Guangxi, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong as well. Gifted with some particular features like “four skills” and “five methods”, Cantonese opera with no doubt is a valuable heritage for Hong Kong.

However, Cantonese opera continues facing challenge in the modern time. Western cultures gradually take dominance in people’s daily life; young people have fewer chances to know and less interest to access to those traditional Chinese cultures. Even the number of performance houses is shrinking all the time: Hong Kong’s Sunbeam Theatre, which is the only remained facility dedicated to Cantonese genre, is about to close in January 2009.

Is Cantonese opera coming to the end of its road? Maybe not. Hong Kong Government is doing something: the Hong Kong Arts Development Council has given grants to Love and Faith Cantonese opera Laboratory to conduct Cantonese opera classes for children and youths (see wikipedia). Some street performers are helping preserving this culture as well: the performance of Cantonese opera is a unique view in many streets of Hong Kong.

Are these enough to protect this Cantonese opera? We don’t know. But we’d like to use some pictures, to let you have a closer look on this traditional Hong Kong heritage.
