  • TEAM 1 - CAGE DWELLERS
Christopher Dewolf, William McCallum, Zoe Li

    DIVISION OF LABOR

    Christopher Dewolf
Research, making contact with government official, photographers, location scouting, photography, audio recording, sound slide editing.

    William McCallum
Research, contact JMSC about equipment hire, contacting professors, photography, audio recording and editing, primary editor.

    Zoe Li

Cantonese speaker, thus primary interviewer. Research, contacting NGOs, social workers, cage dwellers, photography, sound slide editing.

    RESEARCH

    1. Talk to social workers or NGOs that assist cage dwellers, such as SOCO, AHRC. Establish contacts that can lead to interviews with actual cage dwellers themselves. NGOs should have the best knowledge of where to find these people and how to politely go about interviewing them. They are also likely to be able to suggest suitable interview subjects and have some particularly interesting subjects in mind. Interviews with the NGOs can give the big picture on the plight of cage dwellers.

    2. Talk to photographers, such as those on flickr.com, who have taken photographs from within the caged homes. See if they are willing to help us talk to someone living in the cages. Also they might give us advice on how best to talk to and photograph cage dwellers. Are there any famous photographers who have an interest in caged homes which we can do an interview with and include in the slide show?

    3. Talk to a government official, such as Housing Authority official, who can give us the government's take on cage dwellers and any future plans to deal with the cages.

    4. Talk to a professor who can give us quotes on the value of the caged homes as a part of cultural heritage of Hong Kong.

    STORY ANGLE

    A. Focus on one subject and do an in-depth look at his or her life in the caged homes

    OR

    B. A general look at caged homes with interviews with a handful of dwellers

We prefer to do angle A, but it is dependent on finding an interesting, talkative interview subject.

Also: What role does the cage home play in Hong Kong's heritage? What do they say about Hong Kong?

A NYtimes article on mainlanders living in caged homes in HK before the handover
    http://www.nytimes.com/specials/hongkong/archive/960714in-rich-hong.html
A CNN report on mainlanders living in caged homes in HK days before the handover
    http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/9706/25/hkong.cage/

... is there a "handover" angle we can explore?

    BRAINSTORM
of possible questions to ask a cage dweller

    Related to their personal background:
    Where are you from?
How did you come to Hong Kong and what do you do here?
How long have you been living here?
How long do you plan to live here?
What are your plans for the future?

    Related to Hong Kong:
What is your impression of Hong Kong? Do you like it?
What do you hope to achieve in Hong Kong?
What do you think "heritage" means? What do you think "Hong Kong heritage" means?

Related to the idea of "home":
    Do you like the cage?
What does this cage mean to you? Is it your "home"?
    Where is your family?
Where was your home before here and what was it like?
    What is your ideal "home"?
