Soundslide Project: Tai O Fishing VillageGroup member: Nick Olczak , Xue Jing , Han WeiThe Final Project we done can be seen herePlan IntroductionThere has been heated debate about whether to protect the Tai O fishing Village on Lan Tau Island. Tai O fishing Village is one of the few issues in Hong Kong Heritage which has aroused local people’s attention.
Why do they argue about this? What is Hong Kong heritage? Does the good will of making Hong Kong a modern city also do wrong? Does modernizing mean destroying the past? The three of us have no idea on this, we have no prejudice, we plan to explore like anthropologists in this new area.
By interviewing the protection committee and a family in Tai O Fishing Village, we would like to present the local views on this debate and explore the dichotomy of globalization versus localization.
When looking at the heritage of Tai O, its important not to romanticize it too much. This is also an area where people must live. In their studies, the Civil Engineering and Development Department indicate some of the infrastructure problems which need to be addressed in Tai O through redevelopment. Flooding of old houses, build up of rubbish, difficulty of access etc. It is important to bear these in mind. Time-tableStep 1.We will try to interview the person in charge of the committee to protect Tai O fishing village, and, if possible a person from the side arguing for redevelopment. This way, we will fully represent views from the both sides. This initial research will allow us to record the audio that is crucial for an effective soundslide and also to deepen our understanding of the Tai O fishing village.
Step 2Hopefully, through a recommendation from The Preservation Committee, we can find a typical family who still live in Tai O Fishing Village. We plan to go to Lan Tau Island this period and take some photos of the family, whilst conducting an informal interview with them about their lives and how they are changing.
On this visit to Tai O, we also hope to capture some images of the land reclamation and the redevelopment which is already happening in the area.
Step 3A third, and final trip to Tai O village should allow us to complete the photographic element of the slideshow. We hope to spend some time in the village, capturing the unloading of fishing boats, the tourists, and the everyday lives of local residents. After the more specific story, told through a focus on one family, we will present more general images of Tai O life.
